If Life Gives You Lemons….

Spending the past two years without any medication for my Crohns beast has gone well for the most part. Recently my symptoms have increased a bit which makes me wonder how much longer I can go without meds. After the last medication sent me to the ICU I am very hesitant to start any new medication. The changes in my diet were helpful for a while but in the past six months or so the gluten free and dairy free diet just has not been helping. As a matter of fact upon hearing that the coconut (milk/ice cream/yogurt) products I had been eating may have been the culprit leading me to 3 kidney stones in three months I have just gone back to just eating limited dairy. My nails have thanked me, they were getting very brittle and ridged. So far no more kidney stones either. I have been focusing more on organic foods and choosing REAL food instead of processed. Being on the gluten free diet I was eating a lot more processed foods that I'm convinced have more sugar. I've switched to sourdough bread. Apparently the gluten breaks down in the process of making the sourdough. The best tip I've read regarding real food is to look at the ingredients list. If there are more than 4 or 5 ingredients leave it in the store. You would not believe some of the stuff they put in the food we have been eating. If you want to know go to foodbabe.com She tells you exactly what is in all kinds of foods/products and the labeling is very misleading.

Now for the lemons! I've know for some time that lemons are very good for you. I put them in my water all the time. Lemons are cleansing so when I had my first kidney stone I started drinking hot lemon water in the mornings instead of tea. Once summer kicked in I decided to start making fresh squeezed lemon aid. I looked for some recipes and "holy sugar". A small pitcher of lemon aid calls for 1 cup of sugar. No thank you. So I tweaked it:

Cut 4-6 Lemons in half and squeeze the juice out.
Next make a simple syrup (they used 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar)
I used 1 cup of water and 1/4 cup sugar. (I would prefer to use honey but my honey supply has been low)
heat water until sugar is dissolved

add squeezed lemon juice to simple syrup, stir

Pour mixture through a strainer and into a pitcher
Add 4-6 cups of water
Refridgerate
Enjoy :)

Its also a great source of vitamin C. I haven't had any colds since I started drinking this!

November.....Really!!!!

Wow I can not believe it is November let alone the 10th of November. It has been a wonderful fall and I'm loving the colder weather...less hot flashes for me but my hubby is very cold because I am keeping the furnace on 64. If I had my way it would be even lower but when G is here I don't want her to be too cold.

So October came and went and it was filled with lots of family fun. B's college baseball team is only allowed to play 18 innings during the fall (silly NCAA rules) so they played a double header at Seton Hill University. It was a beautiful day for baseball and I loved being on a baseball field watching my baby play. It was also a little sad because J graduated in the spring so this was the first game without him. :( It was great to be there photographing the team again but there wasn't a good spot because the fence around the field was just a little to high for little me so I stood (teetering) on my baseball chair and leaning on the top of the fence for the entire first game. Yep thats me doing anything for a good picture (or a good 500 pictures). Here are a few of B:

A Little (Bathroom) Humor to Brighten Your Day!

Leaving Miami for Ft Lauderdale, I decide to stop at one of those rest areas on the side of the road. I go into the bathroom. The first stall is taken, so I go into the second stall. I had just sat down when I hear a voice from the other stall............

"Hi there, how is it going?"

Okay, I am not the type to strike up conversations with strangers in washrooms on the side of the road. I didn't know what to say, so finally I say:

"Not bad............"

Then the voice says:

"So, what are you doing?"

I am starting to find this a bit weird, but I say:

"Well, I'm going to Ft Lauderdale.........."

Then I hear the person, all flustered, say:

"Look, I'll call you back. Every time I ask you a question, this idiot in the next stall keeps answering me!!!"

Gluten - What is it?

So Last Friday I made a very bad food choice...in my defense we were at a local "favorite" pizza joint with some business associates and pizza is the only thing on the menu! I was hungry so I ate some. That same night I had so much pain. We are talking full blown flare. Saturday wasn't any better and as of today I am still having pain off and on. So I thought I would share the following about the evil gluten.

Being on a gluten free diet people often ask, “What is gluten?” Gluten is the "glue/sticky" protein found in grains such as wheat, barley and rye. Gluten is also found in relatives of wheat, including spelt, farro, kamut, triticale and einkorn.

This is why I and others on a gluten free diet avoid foods like bread, pasta, and more. Gluten can also be found in foods like soy sauce and lunchmeat, soups and sauces.

Why Go Gluten Free?

I have gone gluten free because I have Crohns disease and have an intolerance to gluten. Symptoms of a gluten intolerance include:

Pain or discomfort in the digestive tract
Chronic constipation or diarrhea,
Failure to absorb nutrients
Fatigue
Headaches and migraines
Dermatitis herpetiformis

I have experienced all of the above.

It’s estimated that 1 in 7 people has a gluten sensitivity.

Which Grains are Gluten Free?

There are many grains and starches that you can still eat on a gluten free diet, including amaranth, arrowroot, buckwheat, gluten free oats, millet, montina, lupin, quinoa, sorghum, taro, teff, chia seed, rice, corn, potatoes and tapioca (derived from cassava).

Rice and corn contain a form of gluten, it’s not the same gluten so most people on a gluten free diet should be able to tolerate these grains

Low Gluten Grains (Einkorn)

Some people with a gluten sensitivity can tolerate some of the more heritage breeds of wheat such as einkorn. Einkorn is considered the “original” wheat, and carries only 14 chromosomes whereas modern wheat can carry up to 42 chromosomes.

Einkorn is also high in minerals and nutrients including B vitamins and beta carotene. In addition, einkorn doesn’t carry the D genome, which causes gut inflammation.
Eeinkorn is much more digestible than modern wheat.

The Jovial brand of einkorn is most often recommended. Einkorn is more expensive than modern wheat, but is worth it if you can digest it!

College Baseball Season Has Come and Gone.

Here we are in May already and J and B's college baseball season has ended. They had another great season taking 2nd place in the regular season and second place in the Championship. J is a senior so this was his last season of baseball at LRC. He has spent most of the season teaching himself how to pitch differently...sidearm...due to the problems with his shoulder. He pitched for the first time last Saturday (it was also Senior Day). He did very well. It is amazing to me that he can change just about everything and still be able to throw strikes. God has blessed him with so much talent. He has graduated with a degree in business management and a minor in marketing. We are so proud of him.

B has had a good season also (when he was able to play).

B started the season with high hopes. He was named to the Collegiate Baseball's NCAA Division III Players to Watch list. Entering the 2013 campaign after a fantastic freshman season that earned him ECAC and AMCC Rookie of the Year honors and a spot on the AMCC All-Conference Second Team. He led the Redhawks in runs, hits, doubles, RBI's, and total bases and ranked in the AMCC's top 10 in batting average, on base percentage, hits, and RBI's.

Unfortunately this season he is only leading the team in injuries :(

Right off the bat (pun intended) in the very first inning of the very first game of the season he sprained his ankle sliding into 2nd base. They were playing on a turf field and his spikes got caught on the turf and his ankle and foot did not quite make it to the base with the rest of his body...ouch!

He rehabed with the trainer and used an ankle brace and the team (and hubby and I) headed to FL for a week of spring training. Towards the end of the week he played about 3 innings but tweaked it so back to ice and rest and rehab. As soon as his ankle was better he started playing again and was doing great.

He was named the AMCC Player of the Week and LRC's athlete of the week for the week of April 1, 2013.
For that week he hit .545 (6 for 11) with 5 RBI's, 3 runs, and 2 doubles in a 2-1 week. He went 3 for 5 against #7 Marietta, with 2 RBI and 2 doubles. In a sweep over Pitt-Greensburg, he hit .500 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored.

Then in a game shortly after that he dove for a ball and hurt his hip. The trainer diagnosed a hip flexor pull and he was back to rest and rehab. After about 10 days he was feeling great and started playing again. 2 games in Erie on April 18th and then home for a double header on the 20th. The night before he had a little bit of swelling on the hip but he said it felt fine. He showed the trainer and since it didn't hurt at all and he could hit and run and play the base without any problem he played. He was doing fine till he dove for a ball landing on that hip. It was soar so he only hit in the next game and then pulled himself because it was hurting. He wanted to wait till the next day to have it looked at but I made him come home so I could take him to the urgent care near us. By the time he got home he could barely walk and the swelling was really bad so I took him to the hospital instead. They X-rayed the hip, the bone was fine. They gave him crutches and instructed him to ice it and keep it elevated. They said if it wasn't better in a few days to make an appointment with an orthopedic doctor. I didn't wait. I called and got him in to be seen the next day. They did more x-rays that were inconclusive so the doctor ordered an MRI of the hip and femur. The MRI confirmed her suspicions that he had a degloving injury. The muscle separated from the fascia and blood and fluid filled a large pocket in-between. (very rare for a baseball injury). This explains the huge swelling and the bruising was horrible. She tried to drain it but it was too thick. She wanted him compress the area and gave him a large ace bandage wrap and told him to also wear compression shorts. He was given exercises to do and he started seeing the trainer everyday to get deep tissue massage (he said this was very painful) and ultrasound to break up the fluid so that it would absorb quicker. After about a week and a half the swelling and bruising were so much better and he was able to hit in the last couple games of the season. So now he and J are home for the summer YAY. I love having them home.

So that's pretty much been my life the past 3 months. We just need to get the pool open and then it will be officially summer at our house.

Jumping Through Hoops / Thanks Careone

I spent a good part of Tuesday morning on the phone with several people until I finally got them to actually give me the 50% off they promised hubby. Not Happy Sony...Not Happy at all!!!

Well the rest of the baseball week went well. The team won 4 of 7 games. B's ankle was feeling better so he played 3 innings and it started to hurt again :(

I spent a good bit of time trying to figure out what was wrong with my camera without any luck. Not Happy!

Back at home now I went to a camera shop to have it looked at. They were stumped as well. He checked with the place they use for repairs and...are you sitting down...they stopped making my camera so this place won't even attempt to fix it...Great. Not Happy!

So I called Sony. Their flat rate for repairs is...are you still sitting down...$265.00!!! I spent a lot of money on this camera, I have only had it for 15 months and now I have to pay $265 to get it fixed. Not Happy! Enter Hubby..."What!!! Give me their phone number and all the camera information". 45 minutes later they are sending me pre-paid shipping labels and giving us 50% off the flat rate. Aren't Hubbies wonderful! This is all great but $132.50 is still a lot to pay. They should be doing it for free. An $800 camera should last more than 15 months. Not Happy!

I packed it up and shipped it off to them. I hope they get it back to me quickly.

One thing is for sure. I won't ever buy another Sony camera or anything Sony for that matter. Not Happy!!!

Don't hate me for what I'm about to say!!!

I'm sitting in my hotel room looking out at the beautiful ocean. I could sit here all day. It's been very chilly here in FL but it is suppose to warm up tomorrow.

I know...you are asking yourself shouldn't she be on a baseball field right now??? They only have one game today and it is at 7:00 pm. I am going to have to take my winter coat.

They split with E-Town yesterday. Lost the first game 9-2 and won the second game 31-4. Neither of my boys are playing right now :( J has re-injured his pitching arm and Brian sprained his ankle last weekend in their first game @ waynesburg. We were hoping he would be ok for the trip but it is still hurting and better to wait till it heals. Maybe by the end of the week. In the meantime I was still planning on shooting the whole game as usual but in the middle of the first inning my camera just shut off and will not turn back on. No it is not the battery, I have two and they were both fully charged. I've done some research and tried some tips but so far nothing. It looks like I will be taking it to a camera store when we get back to see if it can be fixed. Of course the camera store that I bought it from a little over a year ago has closed so I don't know if anyone will honor my extended warranty.

It Pays to do a Little Research, and Giveaway Ends Soon

It pays to do a little research. Last week our Samsung LCD TV started taking a very long time to turn on. The first day it took about 20 minuets, the next day about 45, the next day an hour and a half, the next day 2 1/2 hours, and then nothing but a black screen. It was trying to turn on...but nothing. On Friday I went to the Samsung website but couldn't find any advice on what the problem was or how to fix it. Saturday Hubby said lets go get a new TV today. We figured we would get a new one for the living room and try to find someone to look at the Samsung and see if it was worth fixing for the game room . Before we went I decided to google Samsung LCD TV won't turn on and waalaa!!! I found an article. It turns out that thousands of people were having the same problem for the past few years. It’s caused by apparently defective capacitors that help store energy to smoothly operate the televisions. Each capacitor is relatively inexpensive, about $5 a piece. But if it’s defective it can overheat and shut down your TV. After lots of complaints to Samsung they decided to offer a one time free fix for the problem. And right there in the article was an 800 number to call to see if you qualify for the free fix. You had to have a model that was manufactured between 2006 through 2008. Ours was manufactured in 2008. So they arranged for a local repair service to come and fix it for free. YAY!!! So do your research...it may pay off!
